H2O – The magical essence of life !
Hi Magic fans!
I want to discuss a topic that touches us all, and that is water! I, like most
everyone on the planet, love being around water. Whether it’s the ocean, lake
or river, it always feels like you’re on vacation when you’re anywhere near it.
Not only do we like being around bodies of water, we also know that water is an
essential to life itself.
First I’m going to touch on some of the basic
benefits, and then I’m going to share how I use water in my magic show for
large audiences at dinner parties and events.
With 60-70% of
the human body being made up of water and every cell needing it to stay healthy
and alive, it stands to reason that failing to replace the liquid that we lose
in the form of waste and sweat each day will have detrimental effects on our
health.
Water is vital
to many of the body’s natural functions including waste elimination and the
regulation of temperature. Dehydration,
although particularly dangerous for the very young and the very old, can take
its toll on all of us. Headaches, tiredness
and the loss of concentration are some of the most common early symptoms If
nothing is done to rectify the situation, constipation and even kidney stones
can be the longer-term results.
So, how much
water is enough? Well, that depends
largely on the size of the individual, their level of physical activity and the
climate. As a rough guide, however,
under normal conditions the average person should aim to drink around one and a
half litres or 6-8 tumbler-sized glasses per day.
Don’t fool
yourself that tea, coffee and gallons of fizzy drinks will keep you in tip-top
shape though. The caffeine contained in both tea and coffee acts as a diuretic
which makes you lose water from your body and the sugars and artificial flavors
and sweeteners contained in fizzy drinks use up your body’s supply in its
effort to dilute them.
I actually cut
way down on drinking carbonated drinks, but I still drink a lot of tea. It’s a
real challenge to drink as much water as we really need. One thing that I do that helps me to drink
more water, is to carry a lot of water bottles with me so I always have some on
hand. This way I always have something to drink instead of buying a soda or
super sweet drink.
So, how do I
use water in my magic shows? Well, I use a bubble solution (which is part
water) to create floating bubbles with a surprise ending. My favorite use of
water is with my Glass Harp. It is a collection of 30 wine glasses tuned
chromatically using water to attain the correct note. It literally cannot function
without water! The sound it makes is very
clear and sometimes haunting tone. If you’re interested in hearing a sample,
send me a message and I’ll send you a link to an audio or video link.
